Team United Kingdom (U.K.)

The U.K. 2016 Department of Defense (DoD) Warrior Games Team is supported by a partnership between Help for Heroes and the Ministry of Defence. Its mission is to give wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans a chance to use sport as part of their recovery.

Sport plays a key part of recovery, helping with self-confidence and feeling psychologically empowered. It’s available to access throughout the road to recovery from when they are first injured or become ill, at the four Recovery Centres across the U.K. and via grant funding so they can enjoy sport at home.

By training for something like the DoD Warrior Games, an individual is able to develop goals to focus on. These significant behavioral health benefits can be translated outside of sport and into everyday life. Participants in the 2016 DoD Warrior Games have a range of impairments and illnesses, from amputations to behavioral health challenges, all with the common goal of using sport in their recovery from a life-changing injury or illness.

The 30-strong U.K. Team have been selected based on the benefit the DoD Warrior Games will provide them as part of their recovery, as well as personal performance.
