The mission of the Air Force Wounded Warrior Program (AFW2) is to provide well-coordinated, personalized support and advocacy to wounded, ill and injured service men and women as well as their family and/or caregivers. Airmen enrolled in AFW2 go through a 7-phase Continuum of Care that starts with identification all the way through to stabilization/resolution. Involvement in the adaptive and rehabilitative sports program begins during the later stages of the recovery phase and will continue throughout the remainder of the Continuum. Adaptive sports and reconditioning activities help enable healing through a holistic approach: mentally, emotionally, spiritually, physically and socially.

Airman can choose to begin the path to Air Force Trials by participating in Warrior CARE events at one of 6 regions within the United States. Participants include athletes with upper-body, lower-body and spinal cord injuries; amputations; serious illnesses; traumatic brain injuries (TBI); visual impairment and post-traumatic stress disorder. Athletes then compete in the Air Force Trials where they work with expert coaches, sports trainers and nutritionists to prepare for the competitions. This rigorous training enhances the recovery of individual soldiers, regardless of whether they ultimately qualify for the Department of Defense (DoD) Warrior Games.

Athletes possessing professionalism, team spirit and the best qualifying times and/or scores are selected to compete on Team Air Force in the DoD Warrior Games. The DoD Warrior Games represent the culmination of participation in structured adaptive sports and reconditioning activities of wounded, ill and injured service members and veterans through their recovery by encouraging participation in physical and cognitive activities, inspiring physical fitness, mental strength, peer support and encouraging new opportunities for growth and achievement. The 2016 DoD Warrior Games (15-21 June 2016) feature eight sporting events with approximately 250 athletes representing teams from the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, U.S. Special Operations Command and United Kingdom Armed Forces.
